1912

A home, a world away.

Selwood begins as an English-style cottage in the highlands of Ceylon. Gables, timber and a garden bring the feeling of an English country home to Nuwara Eliya.

I. THE BEGINNING
1938

A gift. A new chapter.

Leonard Peiris buys Selwood as an anniversary gift for his wife, Isabel. The house passes into Sri Lankan hands, beginning another chapter in its life.

II. A FAMILY LEGACY
2006

A house becomes a book.

By 2006, its story is on the printed page in Sinharaja Tammita-Delgoda’s book, Selwood: Nuwara Eliya and the Story of an English Cottage.

AT THE SELWOOD TABLE

A little longer
at the table.

Breakfast by a window, a meal shared indoors, or a pot of tea carried into the garden. With an in-house cook, there is good reason to linger.

Something good to gather around.
Tea tastes better with time.

A garden.
A promise.

One of Selwood’s early owners, Henrietta Clark, cared so deeply for the birds that she asked future owners to feed them half a coconut each day.

A small promise. A beautiful way to remember a place.

Some things are
worth keeping wild.

Stay a little longer ↗
Rooted in the past. Alive in the present.A private English-style garden, in the heart of the highlands.

A little room to wander.

Nothing here
is quite ordinary.

Look a little closer. The things that make a house a home are often the things that time leaves behind.
